Ix Chel, a pivotal deity in ancient Maya religion, is known as the goddess of the moon, fertility, medicine, and childbirth. Revered by the Maya people who inhabited regions that are now part of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras, her mythology paints her as a multifaceted figure embodying aspects of creation and destruction. According to Maya lore, Ix Chel, sometimes depicted as an aged woman weaving the cosmos on her backstrap loom, symbolizing the cycle of life, was also portrayed as a young woman pouring water on the earth, indicating her role in fertility and rainfall. Her narratives often intertwine with those of the sun god, Kinich Ahau, portraying a tumultuous relationship that reflects the natural cycles of the moon. As a patroness of women, particularly those in childbirth, and associated with healing and ritualistic divination, Ix Chel's worship was integral to Maya religious practices, emphasizing her importance in connecting the daily lives of the Maya with the celestial and natural world.
