Ishikawa, Japan, 1925, the rush of high economic growth and a new found passion for fashion inspired many Japanese people to bring their lunches to work for the first time. Recognizing this trend, a company called Takenaka soon began producing beautifully crafted bento boxes, hand-painted on the outside with colorful lacquer for the people to carry proudly. Takenaka’s simple, hand polished designs soon sparked a rise in the popularity of bento style lunch boxes, and with time, they became a trend of their own.Throughout our history, and continuing to today, you will find the same level of high quality design in each colorful lunch box of joy. Takenaka was founded in the Yamanaka Onsen district of the city of Kaga known for its long history of lacquerware craftsmanship. Lacquerware, is one of Japan’s oldest traditional crafts and an exquisite traditional technique that have been handed down from ancient times. Takenaka has taken this ancient technique and applied it to a variety of tableware products, including the popular bento box. Our Mission: For over a hundred years, we've produced quality bento boxes with the aim to enhance meal time and create a more sustainable future.
